WARNING THIS POEM MAY OFFEND YOU!
This Week's Poetry Spotlight goes to FreeQuency & Akeem Olaj - Keep on Token!
And because this is a blog about Poetry and Theatre could there have been a possibly better merger of the two?
Plus, it's only fitting to start with this performance by FreeQuency & Akeem Olaj.
I discovered this piece after stumbling onto two other slam poetry performances, which for now will remain nameless.
So that we can truly focus on this piece.
REVIEW:
Personally, I believe slam poetry isn't only for expressing your feelings but also addresses current social and justice issues in your world.
If you have not checked out my About Me, well then you probably haven't noticed.
But, if you've ONE here's a point for you, and TWO you've probably noticed that I'm a Black-American.
I love Poetry that addresses the current social issues of Women, Black people, and my personal favorite Black Women and what they face on a daily basis.
However, the main reason I chose to review this poem is, that it addresses the topic of Tokenism.
Keep on Token offers a refreshing and well-articulated Token point of view of young Black men and Black women.
Micro-aggression is a real issue, and Keep on Token portrays it in a well- spoken way.
Keep on Token's precise synchronization and outstanding emotional portrayal captivates the audience from the very first line.
The energy of FreeQuency and Akeem Olaj's performance tells a telling tale of personal experience.
Have you ever felt excluded in a place you've should've felt included ?
Didn't have the right words to describe it?
Look no further!
Keep on Token is here!
And no you don't have to be Black to relate.
Anyone who fits any category of a minority can easily relate to exclusion and feeling out of place.
I mean obviously ... your the minority therefore you lack the majority!
Meaning that there'll always be a lack of those who are like you on a daily basis.
But, Keep on Token is for everyone especially those who don't fit in the category of a minority.
Keep on Token addresses micro-aggression and makes it very clear the effects it has on others.
So, those who may not be a minority can clearly understand the mindset of someone who maybe.
