Liar Liar

LIAR LIAR by Iriel Walters

The first lie I ever told was to my mother.

The lie, like wildfire feverishly spreading

burning my fiery lips.

Fake tears falling from my eyes,

I apologized with fake sincerity.

Of course I committed this vicious act.

I always do. But I’m a liar and liars lie.

My tongue quick and my words smooth

like boiling lava.

She asked if I’d seen my father

with his mistress.

Curious eyes stared as he slipped his

slimy hands underneath the too short skirt.

Eyes like my own watering, desperate.

Searching her pleading eyes, I lied.

The second lie I told was to my sister’s lover.

Whispering that I had seen naked shadows

dancing on the wall, tangled in sex.

Hot red passion turned her lover’s

face white with rage.

I hid my smile, bathing in the warmth

of this fiery fib.

I would admit to feeling bad

But I don’t want to lie.

Tasting smoke from my fire, my mouth

waters.

The third lie I told was to you, reader

I never did any of this.

My weasel tongue fueling the delicious

heat like gasoline, I open my feverish

mouth again.

Written by Iriel Walters a Nicholls State University student.

I met Iriel Walters in my 300-level poetry class this semester.

I heard this poem for the first time during our one of our poetry workshop.

And I was shook!

I just believe that it is beautifully written and as a class we barely had things we would change.

This poem is so wild and risky.

It takes so many different turns and it leaves you guessing to the very end.

"Fake tears falling from my eyes,

I apologized with fake sincerity.

Of course I committed this vicious act.

I always do. But I’m a liar and liars lie."

There are parts in this poem that just makes you think.

I'm extremely grateful that she was willing to allow me to share this with ya'll.
